World of Warcraft starts all new characters with a tiny bit of equipment, which generally means you’ll start out with a shirt and a weapon of some type, but ZERO cash to buy new things.

If you’re like me, you’ll jump on the quests because it’s the best way to advance at this level, without regular boring grinding of whatever monsters you find running around.

As you progress through the quests, it’s likely you’re going to die a few times while you figure out how everything works, how close you can get to aggressives and exactly how many mobs you can take on, successfully, at one time.

Death’s Durability Detriment

Every time you die, your equipped items degrade in quality by 10% of their full quality. This means that after 10 deaths, your equipment will be at 0 durability and won’t be usable anymore.

The first time I saw the full impact of this durability thing was after I had died a number of times - one time when I went to attack a Boar of some sort in Durotar, I didn’t attack with my weapon and instead was PUNCHING my opponent! Sure, my unarmed combat skill was improving with every punch, but what happened to my weapon??

After finishing the boar off, I looked in my ‘c’ Combat screen and saw that my weapon was still in the main hand slot, so I hovered my mouse over it and noticed the durability was at zero. I had fought my weapon down to a nub!

Visit Armorers and Weaponists

I really don’t recall how I figured it out - maybe I looked it up on the World of Warcraft website, maybe I merely used Google - but it’s the various Shopkeeps that can repair your equipment while also selling you new stuff.

Only certain types of shopkeeps can repair your equipment, but really, it makes sense when you look at their job descriptions. The Bread Vendor in Thunder Bluff, for example, cannot repair your equipment. Neither can the Fishing Supplies civilian. But, the Light Armor Merchant and the Weaponsmith and those types of civilians can help you out.

By default, the “repair” button at the bottom of the shopkeep window only repairs equipped items and doesn’t repair those in your bags that also need repair (for example, if you let the Spirit Healer bring you back to life, your equipped AND inventory items lose 25% durability), but one of the WoW UI Mods I have in place is Always Repair All that I found on Curse Gaming’s website. If you install this Interface Addon, it changes that repair option so it repairs all in your inventory as well as your equipped items.

Other Affects of Reduced Durability

From what I can see, there are no other adverse affects to having the durability of your equipment reduced. I have not seen that the armor or weapon class ratings have dwindled with the lower quality, but I could be wrong, so watch out.

I make it a regular habit to visit someone who can repair my equipment every time I visit a town. Normally it’s easy to do because I’m visiting those shopkeeps anyway, for selling and buying purposes. You can easily make it a regular part of your adventuring days, knowing the information!

Ahhh… 40’s. An “age” when you’ve got a good solid footing under you, you’re strong, you can take the beats for quite a while longer and maybe even survive attacks to fight another opponent before being sent back to the Spirit Healer.

I hit 40 some time in the last week and immediately went to Razor Hill in Durotar to buy my Troll her turquoise-colored raptor mount. Because of my Sargeant rank in the Battlefields, I got a 10 or 20% reduction on the price of both the mount training and the mount itself. Cool! That leaves me a few gold left over for training the new skills that came along with level 40 for hunters.

It’s been a long trek to 40, it feels like. I started just after Christmas and have played this character steadily, daily, since then. I know there are other players who would play a lot longer than 2 months to get their character to level 40, and even play a lot more player hours to get there than I have, but still, it’s a long trek to get to this point where I feel happy, comfortable and powerful.

My adventures in Warsong Gulch are MUCH better now that I’m out of that ghostly 30-39 range which, on my Realm of Zul’jin, seems to be very devoid of battlefield activity, except on the weekend, and even then, only in the evenings.

In fact, one of the first couple WSG’s in the 40-49 range I went into, I came out with 2300 honor points BEFORE counting the honor I’d get for the Honorable Kills I attained during that round. Considering a full week of Battling in the 30-39 range got me a total of 4006 honor points, that recent round was insane.

I’m hoping that I’ll at least have my rank rating move up to be in the upper 50% of Horde Sargeants in Zul’jin this time, because I’ve been hovering in the lowest 25% for the last few weeks, especially as I ventured through my 30’s. I don’t expect a promotion but that would be a nice surprise ;)

Life is getting more fun in the Battlefields in the 40’s I noticed as well. Even though I’m only 40-41, I’m really not getting killed as much as I expected I would. There are more people playing defense, and the offensive groups tend to work together better in our team. I’ve even been noticed and acknowledged by regular Battlefielders of the senior ranks in my range, and I’ve been given party invite privs among an elite list of those given those privs.

Occasionally I’m the raid leader, especially because I have the BGInvite WoW UI Addon that makes the process super-easy. I’ve got it hot-keyed, so when I press F2, invites are all sent out, a ’say’ is said to let folks know to leave their parties if they’re already in one, and the party automatically switches to a raid to allow more than 5 total members. Then when I press F3 after folks have joined the party, everyone is given invite priv’s for new folks joining the battle.

Because I’m a Hunter, I’m generally away from the active fray and am able to invite people as soon as they join the battle without a problem. I can honestly say that when I’m the Raid Leader in the battlegrounds, nobody’s left out of the raid group unless they choose to be.

I STILL haven’t tried AB, but maybe this weekend I’ll get into that. I hear that in the 50-59 range in Zul’jin there’s very little WSG but a lot of AV and AB, so I guess I’d better get used to how the one I can enter, works!

One of the cool things about World of Warcraft is that they provide an engine that will parse UI Addon scripts which are designed to make your gameplaying easier and more convenient.

What do you mean, “More convenient”?

Ah, so glad you asked ;)

Basically, the scripts help automate things. My scripts do things like:

  • Feed my pet when his comfort goes below “happy”
  • Automatically build a database of what my different pets like and do not like to eat, on the fly (ie: as my pet is trying to eat, it updates and retains the information for next feeding time)
  • Automatically switch combat bars depending on whether an opponent is in a Range space or a Melee one compared to me.
  • Make creating and maintaining raid groups easier in the battlegrounds like Warsong Gulch, etc.
  • Building a database of fish I’ve caught in different areas
  • Automatically re-casting after catching a fish or after one gets away
  • Give extra information about objects and NPCs when I hover over them with my mouse (auction prices, disenchant information, whether animals are tamable and what skill they’d give hunters if tamed, etc)

Scripts?? I can’t make scripts!!

Me either!

Thankfully, there are many websites available that offer the UI AddOns that other people have created, which means you don’t even have to worry about learning the scripting language to make things work better!

Download notes

Of course, as was mentioned in my previous entry, always be careful when you download things online. Some sites don’t review the content of what is uploaded, and you may end up with a virus or trojan installed. Always make sure you do regular virus and spybot/trojan scans.

Popular sites with free WoW UI Addons

There are some sites that offer membership access to their scripts - I personally move away from those sites very quickly, because I’m not looking for scripts of such complexity that I feel I should need to pay a membership fee. You can make that decision on your own.

Here are the two main sites I’ve used myself for improving my WoW User Interface for my Hunter character:

Bundled or individual?

One of the first UI mods I used for World of Warcraft was the Cosmos UI AddOn, which is a bundle of useful mods put together which also gathers information for Thottbot. However, my computer can’t handle a lot of active UI addons, so these days I’ve been downloading non-bundled scripts.

Things to consider

While Addons/mods are wonderful things, you need to consider how well your computer performs before loading your game down with them.

My computer has 512MB RAM and 64MB RAM on my video card, so it’s in the “low range” of being able to handle many mods. I initially had the full Cosmos UI package installed but I found my game was painfully slow as a result (as soon as I removed the addons everything was nice and quick again)

UI Addons and WoW patch updates

One last thing to note is that your AddOns are disabled every time there is a WoW patch update, which may be every week. You can re-activate your addons and even make your addon list disregard whether a script is outdated or not when it comes time to load.

But I’ll talk about those details in a future entry!
