Creating an Assist Macro (for coordinated party play)

Simple process:

  • Create Macro
  • Drag it to your Action Bar
  • Use Macro
  • Update Macro

Create Macro

The macro editting area can be reached by typing /macro in your chat window.

In the popped-up window, create a New Macro, select an icon to represent it, and in the text window, put this:

/assist SomePlayer

Drag it to your Action Bar

For quick accessability, drag the new macro icon to your Action Bar, and make sure it's hot-keyed for quick execution.

Use Macro

If you're in a party with SomePlayer, as soon as they enter into battle, execute your new macro and begin your attacks. This macro will target the same enemy SomePlayer is targetting, so you'll join in on her fight instead of bringing another into the fray.

Update Macro

Whenever you get into a party, update your macro so it assists the correct person. No use hitting your "Assist SomePlayer" macro when you're partied up with SomeOtherPlayer!

Updating your macro is similar to creating a new one: Type /macro, find your existing macro, update it, and exit the Macros window.

Good luck!

  1. Macro 1: If your target is unfriendly, mark them, otherwise make them your focus: (could be easily updated to "attack unfriendly, focus friendly" for non-hunters)
    #showtooltip Hunter's Mark
    /cast [harm] Hunter's Mark;
    /focus [help]

    Macro 2: Assist your focus:
    /assist [target=focus, exists]
    /cast [nocombat] attack;
    /startattack [combat];

    I just need to work out the macro 3 to Send pet to attack focus's target. (a la BRK's story today http://bigredkitty.blogspot.com/2007/05/freezing-trap-in-instances-is-schiznit.html)

    This way you don't need to rewrite the macro everytime you change Main Assist.

  2. As a healer, I tend to have my target's target up (from the interface menu) and just target the one boss, then press my heal then click the little bubble that is the mob's target (obviously the game won't let you heal an enemy, so you get a cursor change and all you have to do is click on something.... like their picture. Obviously if stuff starts hitting the fan I go back to clicking on the pictures to the left and watching hp bars, etc...

    Sometimes you're with a tank that is frantically trying to reclaim aggro from multiple mobs (taunting the mob that just ran towards squishies, etc) so targeting 'somebody' may not always be handy, because that may not be the mob that's being aggro'd anymore... A good tank won't let this happen though, and should have enough aggro/time to get back to first said mob that you are DPS'ing before it goes after you.

    You just have to figure out the gameplan before hand... IE: will tank reclaim aggro from all mobs without a specific target, other than the DPS target (skull) that everyone else is burning down? Or will you have specific CC in the group (hunter, mage, rogue, priest) that you don't have to worry about those? A series of focus fire, IE: Skull > Square > Circle > Triangle > Moon, etc? That way everyone knows who they're on, and who's next?

    Assist is probably the most helpful command in dungeons, and people who solo a lot don't know it and tend to pull aggro off a 2nd mob that isn't being focused on, etc. Now all mobs should have SOME aggro on them, or a single AOE, or heal will peel them off the tank/ offtank which is bad bad bad news.

    You know a PUG is going to go well when a mob peels off towards the mage, and after he dies you ask how come he wasn't assisting the tank, and he says 'whats that?' ;-) That's when I send them to this website! LOL

  3. LOL, Rizzo :) Yep, that's exactly it re: the Mage!

    With my playing a Mage now, I think about these things more.

    Plus, playing with a level 50 lock who had been powered through levels and dungeons and parties by friends and had no clue how to use Curse of Recklessness to stop things from running away from me when I'm tanking... But that's another entry I haven't figured out how to write quite yet.

    The comment of "this run brought to you by deathcoil" from the warlock, however, didn't inspire me in a positive way ;)
