WoWGrrl's own Warcraft Gold guide: Get Rich & Stay Rich right from level one!
Wealth on Warcraft

At level 64 my Mage dropped skinning (which was at 375) and picked up Tailoring as a way to get a leg up on getting the best equipment for my Mage when the time comes to pick up things like Primal Nethers in the dungeon runs I’m doing.

Farming Linen Cloth

As a Troll was my first character and I didn’t actively play anything other than one character until that one hit 60 (pre-expansion), Orgrimmar is the city that I’m most used to, so whenever it comes time to pick up some training, Orgrimmar is where I default to.

AOE Farming of Ragefire Chasm / RFC

So, I went into The Drag and picked up Tailoring, and then I headed into the Cleft of Shadows and jumped into Ragefire Chasm, aka RFC - a dungeon aimed for level 12-17 Hordies (you CAN get in at level 8 but I wouldn’t recommend trying that in a Pick Up Group of strangers).

I farmed through RFC twice for the Linen Cloth and lowbie green equipment drops (you see, ever the alt-o-holic, I have a new lowbie - currently level 10 druid) and after those two smashingly-fun AOE-fest farm-throughs, I had enough linen to turn into enough bolts to make enough Tailoring gear that I could consider progressing on to Wool Cloth very shortly.

Farming Linen Cloth and Wool Cloth

Deadmines was the next dungeon that I farmed through with my Mage - I have never gone through the instance as an Alliance player (my highest Alliance toon made it to 20 but never instanced), but since one of my guildmates got to mid-40s with an Alliance toon as his first he was able to pass on the information that Deadmines (sometimes called Van Cleef so it’s not confused with Dire Maul when referred to in short form) is a GREAT place to farm for both Linen Cloth and Wool Cloth.

Deadmines isn’t as easy to AOE group up in some spots because while all the Defias guys (Defias Conjurer, Defias Blackguard, Defias Bodyguard, Defias Digger, Defias Evoker, Defias Henchmen, etc) were easy enough to round up (and I resisted anything the casters threw at me so that wasn’t a big deal), the Goblin Woodcarvers later on threw axes at me and knocked me down mid-gather. Ah well, they all died for their treachery.

Mage AOE Farming of Deadmines / Van Cleef dungeon

My favorite place to gather everyone up and hose them all down with my Blizzard spell was near the end, as I was approaching the final boss Van Cleef - out on the docks with the plethora of Pirates and their companion Parrots. From what I remember, none of them were casters so it was super easy to gather them up and mow them down, and the death sounds of the little parrots was great! ;) ;)

Farming Silk Cloth

When it comes to Silk, there’s one place that I think of - Scarlet Monestary. I’ve actually nicknamed that “The Silk Factory” and generally refer to it that way when someone saw my 64 Mage in Scarlet Monestary and wondered what was going on.

At the level of Silk in Tailoring, things start to slow down quite a bit. Where I only needed 2 runs each of RFC and VC, I probably did 4 runs of the Scarlet Monestary Armory and 3 of the Scarlet Monestary Cathedral in order to get enough Silk Cloth to progress past it into things that required Mageweave Cloth.

I brought a guildmate friend through with me for at least two of the Scarlet Monestary runs to help spread the benefit around - burning off rest bonus on his lowbie toon and getting some equipment upgrades while handing over all of the Wool Cloth, Silk Cloth and Mageweave Cloth that dropped from the mobs we were killing.

Mageweave and Runecloth were levels where I “got by with a little help from my friends”, for sure - but I don’t have time to continue this entry right now so I’ll write more later!

Its a shame its harder for me to go back like this on my priest and ‘farm’ low level stuff, or whatever… Although I do have a fair bit of +dmg, and one on one I’m okay… but I have to stop every few steps and drink! Costs me almost as much in drink as I get in inventory!!!!

Usually I break out the hunter again and run through something like this with very little downtime and cost (Arrows are relatively cheap). :-)

For any readers, VC is great for linen.. But the Stockades is where wool flows like water..

I have yet to get my toon to farm SM, but at 64 I’ve farmed Zul Farrak. Looking for Mageweave. While speaking (read: whining and crying) about mageweave and how long it takes to get any decent amounts of it I remembered that given the mob level that it drops off of.. The place, (untested so far) would be hinterlands.. In the masses of YOUR people.. The Trolls. If I remember right they respawn quick (many lvl 40′ish deaths to account for this) and there are precisely, 1 bajillion of them. I plan on testing this on the weekend, as the weekends are for FARMING…

later val!!

Hey, I’m going to try this “reply to folks who note me by noting them back” trick, hopefully it works, as I feel bad not responding to the great comments that come through.

Rizzo: I’m finding my Mage to be much better for instance farming than even my Hunter, who was awesome at it - the whole AOE-things-down is way faster, and generally I don’t have to drink much. But, I basically refuse to bring my Warrior in because it seems to require too much attention to get the job done. Funny how some classes are just better farmers than others :)

Dwarf: I think getting into the Stocks for a Horde toon would be an interesting challenge! :) But yes, you Alliance folk seem to have the best wool cloth dungeon there is :) And yep, Jintha’Alor is my place of choice for gathering Mageweave as it’s got other things of benefit as well to help fund the occasional purchases I need to make while levelling the skill.

Later!

When I needed wool on my horde character, I got it from Durnholde Keep in the Hillsbrad foothills — non-elites are easier and faster to kill, and there’s a vendor/repair NPC right there, so I could get the wool longer without having to stop and empty bags. Also, I was doing this for cloth rep turnins at a lower level (low-mid 50s) than your mage, so non-elites were easier.

For silk, again, I got it from non-elites — one of the centaur camps in Thousand Needles.

Mageweave — ogres in Tanaris.

Runecloth — I worked on my Timbermaw rep at the same time, and went after Deadwood Furblog

If you’re on a PvP server, grinding cloth safely inside an instance might make more sense, though.

Val, it is a definite challenge getting in stocks as a hordey.. And to be honest I don’t know how they do it.. but I have seen 3 guys go in before.. hehe.

I have even killed me a mage in IF before.. Somehow you hordies just get around.. Now the TRICK would be for an alliance guy to make it to RFC. If I remember right, you have to basically run by EVERYONE to get to it in Org.. I’ll try it someday.. but oh well.

How did I know a fellow troll would know the name of the zone?

OH forgot to add, for farming purposes, runecloth… Go up from WPL through to Hearthglenn. Tons of guys, good respawn rates.. and I think you can find a lowbie willing to tag along to finish some quests. Don’t know for sure about quests, but I always find 1 or 2 lowbies (mid 50’s) up to their nose in the scarlet fellas. Being affliction I can help easily by dropping 2 dots and keep walking.

Locks Rule, BTW.

As a ‘kill single mob at a time’ kind of farmer, I went to Tanaris for my mageweave, either from the Pirates on the coast (if its not TOO busy) or from the higher level ogres in the mid-south part of the map. Also since they are not elite, they die quickly and nicely. Having not taken a mage above level 45, I’m not too familiar with using them for farming elites 20 levels below me. ;-) Guess having stomping grounds that are free of other people (instances) is pretty compelling. I know hitting lower levels with high level alts can be fun as well (taking out frustrations) and the drop per mob may be higher..? Can’t beat SM for Silk for sure!

PS: just curious what you mean by ‘note you’?

There is no place in Azeroth that compares to the Woolly bounty of one location: the Furbolg cave in Ashenvale, and it’s usable by both Horde and Alliance.
