Do You Bother Rolling For Chests In Dungeons?
Some time ago, maybe around Patch 2.1, a change was introduced into the game surrounding chests and how parties handle who gets the loot.
The Old Way (before Patch 2.1 or so)
Initially, whoever opened the chest would get all of the contents, and the regular rolling mechanisms present in groups for corpse loots didn't apply.
This meant social structures had to be set up amongst players - agreements that when a chest was found in a group situation, everyone in the party would /roll and the winner of that roll would get the chest and its contents.
Of course, that also meant problems - a player could easily circumvent the social expectations and there really was very little recourse except to vow never to party with that player again if it looked as if it were intentional and not an honest low-level-player's mistake (that we all made or watched someone else make while in our first groups).
In some of the Outland dungeons, like Ramparts (the first one you'd do in Outland), a chest would spawn at the end of the instance after the boss was killed, and since the chest usually contained two blues, the screaming was intense about "ninjas" and how to deal with them. So, Blizzard made a change.
The New Way (current day)
Nowadays, chests obey the looting rules of your party, and therefore a standard party setup makes it so that contents of chests that are Green+ in quality pop up a standard rolling window like a regular corpse loot would.
But, there's still a question - potions, ores, bags and the likes are White in quality and therefore do not trigger the roll, and therefore whoever opened the chest DOES get those materials where others miss out.
So, has the social agreement changed at all?
What Agreement Do You Prefer?
I'd love to get feedback on this topic from everyone out there - and if you can, please let me know what level of characters you have as well, so I can keep that in mind.
Do you suggest people /roll when a chest is discovered in a dungeon?
If others suggest a roll-off on a chest in a dungeon, what is your response?
Any other comments?

I prefer that EVERYTHING in a chest would invoke the roll mechanism. I've been hosed outta whites that were very useful or even needed for certain quests because the other player opened the chest. in the instance of uest items they needed 10 of the items too, fine, but 16 can out of the chests (crates in strath) they kept them ALL and since the item is soulbound once picked up... I spent several hours trying to keep my cool.
Very situational Val.. very. Boss chests, should be rolled without exception. Typically in my groups we have someone open and link contents. I so the tailor doesn't end up with a green 2h axe, when the pally would love him for it. Also so the blacksmith doesn't get 40 bolts of cloth, when the tailor could use it.
As in all things I think more sense in how you play reflects more on the maturity of the group as well as that of the individual. I've had ppl take loads of stuff from me, but I've also sneezed and need rolled on a purple shield (which, I then had to pay the tank big bucks cause it was 1) my bad, and 2) I wanted him to have it.. as my warlock would love a shield, but is restricted away from it). Stuff happens, even in WoW, and people shouldn't be so eager to label "ninja" on things. Maybe there are tons of farmers who group to get the drops and then ditch.. but seriously I've never been "ninja'd" cause I don't consider a single act a bad thing. Now I've been in groups where someone didn't pass, then roll on a epic, only to get immediate grumblings from the other groupmates. Followed quickly by an apology or a kick..
Chests though, I don't want 40 mana potions if I'm a 70 warrior, so I totally want someone to report what the chest has.. and divy it up that way. If 3 ppl are miners and there's ore.. /roll.
First off, I love the site. I like your style, and your descriptions from the perspective of someone who enjoys the game without being a hardcore raider. I get excited when my google reader pops up an unread notice next to your blog's name.
In my guild, and most PUG's I roll with, we /roll for the chest and winner gets everything in the chest, which usually requires everyone else to pass on greenies. When a blue comes up in a chest, if anybody needs the item they can ask to /need, and if nobody can use it, we try to DE and give the shard to the original /roll winner.
That said, I typically end up passing on chest rolls, as I'm happy with my gold income from herbalism and mining, and would rather my guildmates with expensive professions or expensive plate repair bills get the chest contents.
I'm only lvl48 but usually when in a dungeon I'm not worried about any of the whites, so if someone else gets a potion or stack of silk, that's fine. I usually only think about whites when grinding for myself.
Here's how I handle these situations and you can compare based on your experiences.
If I'm on a 70 and am running a PuG dungeon I almost always pass and tell people to hand out the whites to those that could use it most(mana pots to casters, scrolls to most applicable - rolls if they wanna wrangle for it)
If no one can use them or wants them then I leave it to whoever wants it to go pick it up but I don't slow down much. I try not to give my teams a lot of down time as I find it leads to activities and actions that can ruin a run. Give people the time they need to mana up, prep or wake the dead/heal then move on - in other words, be ready to go, but waste no time and no one gets bored.
If I'm on a PuG but not running it I usually keep quiet & pass unless I am low on a pot or something.
In the lower instances - pre-Sunken Temple, I will usually stick to one set of these rules. I'd rather be fighting for the finish line than for a white drop I could buy for 30s.
Then again, I realize a lot of people don't think that way - some folks see the chance to roll and will for whatever reason - regardless of their need. If I see this happening I will say something - leader or not. Examples: Warriors takin mana pots when a priest is in the group - that sort of thing. And I usually warn then /kick people for doing stupid things in my groups - they aren't worth the effort or deaths they can cause. Cold-hearted? yes a bit, but I like to have fun while keeping focus on group goals and needs.
I tend to head to a chest first, then link anything above 'food' to the group to see who wants it.... most of the time there's a miner taking the ore, alchy taking herbs, tailor taking the cloth, Hunter taking pet food, etc.... now granted all that stuff could be 'looted' then AH'd for a few extra $$$... but is it really worth it to the detriment to your groups morale/happiness? I like that green+ items get rolled on, makes at least that part like all the other loot in the dungeon.
If someone goes and loots a chest without consulting the group, or offering any of us anything, there's usually a 'share or get booted' chat, even if its something simple... because if they'd do that to some stupid white/grey, what do you think is going to happen when your blue/purple item drops??? Most of the time 'oops's at higher levels are usually just that... and if someone like Dwarfen says, loots by accident and then tries to make amends for something they can't even use, then I'm usually pretty understanding.
I've been in a group with someone who rolled on a purple just because it was 'epic'. Now the item was CLEARLY not for his class, and there WAS someone in the group that would definitely make use of it, but they both rolled 'need'... Ninja's response? Its leather, I can wear leather, so I should be able to roll on it....... /headpalm... /groupkick... /ignore... /sigh...
