Wealth on Warcraft

Y’know what?

I like knowing something that someone else wants to know but doesn’t know.

And while I do like to help people and share things I’ve learned, I like it even more when the asker COULD know what they wanted, if they did something simple, but they choose not to take the action required.

“Does anyone have a DPS meter?” Is one of those questions that gives me cruel pleasure.

Pleasure for two reasons: Yes, I have a DPS meter, but no, I’m not going to admit it to you nor share the results of it. If someone else does, that’s their decision, but I won’t do it, not even for friends.

Turning Annoyance Into Pleasure

I’ll admit, I didn’t always feel this pleasure… It used to really annoy me, and I’d frequently say “if you want to know the meters, install them…” but that just served to escalate my own annoyance when the person ultimately responded something confirming just how lazy they really were, and how much they expected others (complete strangers!) to enable their laziness. And of course, they didn’t feel guilty about this at all.

But, at some point in trying to feel good feelings more often than bad, I switched the way I looked at the situation and now find myself feeling pleasure about having knowledge that someone too lazy to get it themselves wants, and purposely withholding it.

According to the works of Esther Hicks (which are odd in some parts but very interesting and helpful in others if you’re into the self-help/”how to live a joyous life” genre of books), I moved from Irritation to Pessimism, which is a step UP the ladder towards Joy and Appreciation and Empowerment, and away from the bottom of the ladder of Fear, Grief, Depression and Powerlessness.

Am I Being Mean?

Yes, it’s true, it could be labelled “not nice” behavior, but I tell ya - I do this in other relationships as well, without guilt: I withhold certain types of information that someone could easily gather themselves if it were truly valuable information to them.

Why? Because I’ve learned that if I just GIVE them the answer they seek, I teach them they don’t need to take responsibility for what they want to acquire/learn - they can rely on the organization or knowledge of others to get what they want. And worse, if they’re someone I run into often, the more answers I give, the more they depend upon me as the source of their answers.

Oops, did I just twist my body while doing a little shrug? Is that why you’re on the floor? Oh, I’m sorry. Looks like you’d better get up, as we’re moving forward.

Funny Who Asks For Posting Of Meters…

I do find it interesting, tho, that the person asking for the DPS meters is either right on top on my charts, or way down at the bottom. Very few of them are in between. Maybe those people have meters and are striving, or maybe they just don’t care?

Do you have some type of damage meter installed and running when you do an instance or a raid?

Or did you take offense to my attitude above, because you’re one of those who cares about the meters but doesn’t have them installed for whatever reason? :)

(and yes, I know some people’s computers are too slow to run many addons. In my mind, a crappy computer is not a valid excuse for relying on complete strangers in a PUG, or even your “buddies” in a Raiding guild. RL friends, that’s up to you.)

First off I take no offense at your feeling malevolent joy from withholding info from people.. Very sith.. “.. tell me what you crave, so I may deny you..”

However my current PC situation does not really WORK well with recount(my damage meter of choice when my REAL pc is running). Damage meters has always been buggy for me as well.. So really I don’t use it while on my ghetto-pc. I ran ramps last night with 2 of my super-uber-mega guildmates who are making their way through BT and Hyjal.. I wanted to know the damage, but didn’t ask. Not from guilt of not having recount loaded (boo hoo), but from sheer irritation I had that my good PC is still dead and I am basically limping across outlands into lvl 70 (should hit 69 tonight, btw). Do I wish I did? Yes. I haven’t been in but 1 other instance since I hit 50 with this guy and I did (ahem..) very well. Would I have been tops? No. Bottom? No. I was in there with a epic healing pally, and an epic tanking druid.. and a 59 fury warrior.. and a 58 enhancement shaman. So I would be precisely in the middle.

When I group with my buddy (also BM hunter, only 70 and epic’d out), I try to be at least 20% of the dmg. Why? I dunno. It seems great but if I fall behind that I feel crappy and I start CHURNING dmg out like a Jack Russell Terrier on Meth. I will never beat him, too much time into his gear and me too far away and its not a priority. Just knowing that I’m not total “dead weight” makes me feel a bit better.

Do I think that’s YOUR problem and YOU should tell me? Well I’d appreciate it.. but I mean its not like I am going to cry..

Yep I have them, but usually they only get shared on our private channel, not with the raid itself.. apart from anything else it is too much spam, and once shown gets constantly asked for.

Usually my friendly Rogue and I are having DPS-off, so we will taunt each other with how close we are.

But you are right about those that ask for the meters… we usually find it is the ones at the bottom (below the tanks, and slightly above the healers) that are asking.

We have had a few people drop group after seeing the results THEY asked for… like we were showing off….

But generally we don’t publish them.. as you say, get them yourself or live without.

The reason why I don’t play with a DPS meter is because it drops my framerate (yea I need a new computer), but I know how annoying “dmg meterz plz” is, and I never ask for it.

What my guild does to solve this problem is we have a in game channel for the sole purpose of posting meters. Just use “xDPS” where x = guild name. Since it’s in its own channel, it won’t get in the way of party/raid chat. Only the people who want to know, will get to see it.

I often ask for a DM to see if my meter is holding up to the standard, I run a DM all the time.

There is one basic flaw with using damage meters - not everyone contributes to the raid by doing damage.

For pure dps classes like Rogues there is some relevance there, as they should be able to compare themselves against each other without too much trouble.

There are classes that contribute to other people’s damage by nerfing their own output, but by doing so, the overall damage of the raid is increased.

As for who asks for the meters, usually it is the person who thinks they are doing the most damage, and this typically happens when said person has much better gear than everyone else, and has to prove their ’skill’ by making it apparent to everyone that they did the most damage.

I don’t think it’s being mean I’ve encountered people like that throughout life. It happened a lot before I became a business owner some coworkers I worked with always expected someone to their work for them. :-)

I think at times it’s best to let people learn for themselves. At times I’ll tell people how they can obtain the information but if I know they are lazy, forget about it. :-)

I recently installed a damage meter when I rolled a fire mage, mainly to see she performed as she leveled. I haven’t had that question yet, then again I do a lot of solo questing.

Agreed, being a tank(withouth Alt-itis), the typical pug kid going “d00d, got dps meter” is annoying. Specially when they just want to show off thier e-manlihood or want to blame their gear/spec for doing less dmg than the vanity pet of the healer. One situation tho now that patch came out that is important for tanks to ask for dmg count: to know who to vigilate. yeah, rule of thumb is healer, but with whaky dps atm *cough* palies *cough* you want to know whos the kid who will be pulling your agrro. I know, they changed heroics from premiere mobs to the special olympics of monsters, still is the only reason why a tank would ask for meter. Why would we have a meter, well, i dont pug regularly, and im a tank, my dps usually not my main concern.
