How To Win Alterac Valley – Horde

Back in January I wrote an entry about getting into the Alterac Valley battlegrounds as a Horde player, and how much of a challenge winning has been seen to be by the vocal Horde population on the forums and in other discussion areas.

I mentioned Preform AV Enabler there as a way us Hordies could band together to make a more cohesive team that, hopefully, with the right leadership and followership, could actually win AV more often than lose.

Then, Patch 2.4 came out and us Hordies were pushed back in our starting point, further south on the map than we had been before, and coordinated play became even more important.

So, I recently made a video about AV, Preform AV Enabler, how to use it and how to find it, so more people could get in on the premades on their own realm.

Then, just a few days ago, Simply Tatang commented on that January AV entry and gave a link to their own blog where they had an entry about a specific strategy that can work for Hordies now that Patch 2.4 has pushed our starting point back!

I thought this was a great time to share both Simply Tatang's posted strategy, and my video about using the Premade AV Enabler addon. I believe the combination of the two should lead you to many victories, as long as your Premade has enough reputation to get rid of AFKavers and others who Honor farm without participating in the battleground.

If your reputation sucks on the realm, I can't help getting people to listen to you ;) But that's a whole 'nuther entry I won't delve into.

  1. I'm glad this strategy is making its way around all the Hordies out there. We run this strat for our premades on Smolderthorn US and it works like a charm. It has a 90-95% success rate and games usually don't take any longer than 15 minutes. They only take that long if the Alliance are being bastards and mobbing IW and SH bunkers.

What amazes me though is the Alliance's ability to respond to our premade strategies...they will often mass effectively where we're hitting and can actually repel a few of our advances. I don't think in a million years in any universe the horde would be capable of doing something like that.

I think after getting manhandled for so long in AV (at least my battlegroup did) the horde had developed a somewhat defeatist attitude. As soon as the alliance would recap a tower or cap east or west FW tower, people would resort to calling each other n00bs, start cussing up a storm, and then demand that everybody just roll over and die. I've always hated that attitude in battlegrounds...we're here to fight no matter what turn the battle takes.

But at least now the horde are regaining our "rightful" reputation as masters of the battlegrounds and I hope our spree of AV victories continues long into the future.

  2. A bit of shameless self promotion here, but I wrote a 2.4 strategy guide for both factions. The basic premise of the whole guide is that you have little control over what people do in AV, so what should you be doing to make yourself a Difference Maker?

In a premade, the recap strategy that was mentioned is by far the best one to use. The problem is getting people to play the tower game. In most AV PuGs, the FW Tower defense is actually a better strategy. If all you can muster for a premade is a group of 5, then simply hanging out at the FW towers is enough to win 70% of your games. The only risk to the strategy is that O gets killed and set back to Frostwolf resulting with too many on Defense. Of course, I typically end up with a couple hundred honor in HKs when this happens, so it’s not quite as bad as it seems. If your goal is honor farming, then what you really want to do is slooow the Alliance offense down, but not stop them. Stopping them means a turtle.

Best defensive classes for FW Towers include Hunters, Rogues, Paladins and Druids. Paladins are always great flag defenders and can stun in the “kill zone” of the Towers. Hunter pets are great in Towers (send a pet to attack, then jump off tower if you are dying) and the Hunter frost trap next to the Tower “kill zone” is invaluable. Rogues/Druids are great for sneaking in and recapping towers and can both stun/root people as they pass the “kill zone” of the Towers like Paladins. A couple of Rogues and a Druid can be nasty if they keep going back/forth between recapping East and West even when there is a boatload of Alliance waiting around.

  3. That looks like a great add on. I have Horde and Alliance toons but for now I mainly play Alliance. I love the BG's although at times it can be frustrating tossed in with a group that you might not have worked with before. I can see something like this being extremely useful.

I played Altarec Valley (with my level 48 fire mage) late last evening and wished that I was teamed with some of my buddies in game. I have done that before and it was fabulous. I do think things would have gone a lot better for us if our team if there had been more coordination. Horde was much better organized and soundly beat us twice.

  4. I meant I played Aranthi Basin last evening with my level 48 mage, lol. :-)
