The Cutest Daily Quest: The Kalu'ak
Most everyone in my Raiding guild has their main toons all decked out with gear and reputation, and professions have been leveled over time or we've recently finished powerleveling them to the top, so we've turned to working on our alts.
Most of the guild alts aren't in the guild, but the majority of us subscribe to an obscure chat line so guildies can get in contact with us if they need to - mainly for running dungeons, but sometimes for general conversation whilst fishing or doing some other boring activity ;)
In working on my alts, I had to decide what I was going to do with them - I'm fine with dilly-dallying around once in a while, but overall I tend to have a "plan" for each toon.
Am I going to level by questing? By dungeon-running? Or only incidentally due to spur-of-the-moment opportunity guild run with lower-level alts, and daily quests otherwise?
Daily Quests I Do On All Toons
I'm not really a Daily Quest fan, in general. I mean, it's not the way I earn my money, and I'm not much into quest grinding without a purpose, so I don't really do it very much.
But there are a few cute daily quests that I make sure I can do on all of my post-70 toons as they advance through Northrend, either because they're cute and fun, or (more likely) because they have a utilitarian purpose to me.
The cutest daily reputation quest I've found has been with the Kalu'ak tribe, and it's named "The Way To His Heart..."
How To Start This Daily Kalu'ak Quest
When I first visited Kamagua with my level 70 Mage, I was surprised to find that I couldn't find the daily quest I had gotten used to completing on my Priest, who had done many quests in the area on her way through to 80.
When I brought my 73 Hunter across to the same place, the quest still wasn't there, and there was no grey question mark, either. Something was fishy.
So, off to WoWWiki.com I went, because that's where I go whenever I need information about specific Reputation Factions and their related daily quests. (I use WoWHead.com and Thottbot to look up mobs and quest comments)
I found the specific quest I was looking for, and noticed that it had a pre-requisite quest that brings you into Scalywag Bay to the south. You can find Swabbin' Soap on the boat there.
What? Scalywag Isn't Friendly??
Great! When I went to pick up that pre-quest, I find out that Scalywag Point is full of unfriendlies.
This is what I get for not having done any quests in the area... an opportunity to learn the quickest and most direct routes to quests that are strangely locked by other quests but otherwise seem unassociated.
And then I can share them here! Oh joy. :)
At any rate, further research showed that in order for the Scalywag Point folks to become friendly enough with me to give me quests, I'd have to visit the top of the Ancient Lift in Howling Fjord in order to find and complete The Dead Rise!.
Once you've finished that quest, you get a bundle of goods to bring back to Kamagua, which then leads to a quest that refers you to a guy who is on the outskirts of town, near where the ice floes break up to the south. He brings you to Scalywag Point, where a number of quests await you.
Only the Blubber quest on the ship is required in order to unlock this cute Kalu'ak quest. When you finish the Swabbing Soap quest, you won't even get any indication that the daily quest has opened up, but if you return to Kamagua, you'll find the blue exclamation mark.
I was able to repeat this with my 70 mage and get the reputation quest right away from this location, but I don't know if there are restrictions if you're trying to do the quests at a lower level than that.
The quest in Moa'ki Harbour has a level restriction that required my Mage to level up to 71 or 72, but the other quest in Borean Tundra near Unu'pe Harbour was available right away at 70.
Okay, So Why Chase Kalu'ak Reputation??
Other'n the cute quests, why bother chasing Kalu'ak reputation in Northrend?
Is this something that players who aren't into raiding should consider doing, or not?
Well, I'll answer the second question first - if you're a non-combat pet collector, or a Fisherman, then the Kal'uak has some great rewards at Exalted that you'll want to take a look at.
Check out Pengu the pet penguin, and the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole which requires fishing 300, adds +30 to fishing bonus and allows for underwater breathing when equipped.Other than that, the Kalu'ak have some pretty decent gear for a variety of classes, available at different stages of reputation. I used both the chest piece and the polearm on my Hunter as she was leveling through to 80, and they filled in some drop gaps that I was experiencing. Always nice to be able to walk in and buy a blue chest piece at 76 to replace the ratty old one!
And raiders - unless you're comfortable with the amount of cash you're paying on a regular basis for buff foods (friends are regularly selling 5 Firecracker Salmon for 40g), getting reputation with these guys for the fishing pole, and advancing your fishing so you can use it will save you a big wad of cash over time.
Especially as Uludar approaches, which I'm sure will just drive the cost of buff foods up as guilds compete for first kills.
I won't be profiting from it, since I only really fish up my own consumables, but I know some people who will be rakin' in the dough as they try to get into an Ulduar PUG ;)

I need to be working on my rep with me main let alone my alt LOL.
There is so much i need to do with Esdras still but i just havent been bothered.
Thank you for posting this... I am a fishing fool and this looks like a great quest to do (for rep to get the pole). I have not explored Northrend yet, so this is valuable info to me. Also, could you share any strategies for getting the most effective "plan" set up for leveling between raiding? (I try to research mobs for drops which feed into my professions or reside in farming areas, but I was wondering what other insight you may have.) Thanks again for sharing this cute quest info!
Thanks for the article. I'm in the neighborhood and will now be doing a u-turn to visit; putting around Shadow Valley ready to buy my helicopter!!!
Thanks for posting. I knew the daily was supposed to be there, I'd done the pirate quests and it still was locked. I'd missed the mage. Doh! I'm very grateful that you pointed out what I'd missed.
The pole also offers pretty decent melee power in the event you are on a PvP server and are subject to getting ganked - it basically removes the need to take a few hits while you switch out your pole.
Perfect! I was wondering what was going on. Very detailed. Thank you.
