Yay For Mustard Dogs!

Mustard Plant In Dalaran

Mustard Plant In Dalaran

Mustard Dogs is one of the Daily Cooking Quests introduced in the city of Dalaran in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

While the Burning Crusade expansion also had Daily Cooking Quests that players can continue to do from a Shattrath City starting point, the main value in making sure your level 65+'s are able to do the Northrend ones comes in the form of spices: Northern Spices.

Northern Spices are, of course, the ingredient that turns a normal buff food dish into an uber buff food dish (well, as uber as you can get in-game at the moment), and regular raiders need a regular supply of the stuff in order to keep their own consumables supply stocked up for raids.

The Current Price of Northern Spices

While the price of everything bought and sold on the Auction House rises and falls with the changes in supply and demand, Northern Spices are still pretty profitable for how much effort one needs to put into gathering them.

Right now when I look at the Zul'jin Auction House on Horde side, I see the cheapest Northern Spices are being sold for over 1g each spice, with stacks of 10 spices selling for at least 15g a stack. When I look at my WoWEcon addon results in the tooltips, I see sales prices averaging 3g each spice!

Considering the completion of one Northrend Daily Cooking Quest nets you a handful of Northern Spices plus a Dalaran Cooking Award which ITSELF can be turned in for 10 more spices, I'm sure you can see the quick money available on a daily basis to even the most casual of high-level players.

And what about the raiders? A high-end progression guild requires consumables use, and on progression nights (like coming up with WoTLK's Ulduar) a single raider may go through 30 or MORE of the high-end buff foods in a single night. 30x25 raiders x ?? raid teams = big World of Warcraft gold for you!

Why "Yay" For Mustard Dogs?

Simply put, the rewards for the Mustard Dogs daily cooking quest are the best of all the daily cooking quests.

My Favorite Daily Cooking Quest

My Favorite Daily Cooking Quest

Where other cooking quests only award you one Dalaran Cooking Award, with the chance of finding another random one in the Spice Bag you get alongside the first award, Mustard Dogs reliably gives TWO awards right off the top, and still retains the chance you'll get another award in the Spice Bag, too.

I've had days where I've gotten THREE Dalaran Cooking Awards by doing that one simple quest.

And since it's a quest you can prepare for in advance so you never have to leave Dalaran to complete it, it's one you can do even with your "retired" toons who are parked in the city!

Stocking Up Your Rhino Meat Collection

Rhino Meat is another one of those things you can make some nice profits from, especially on those days when Mustard Dogs is the Daily Cooking Quest in Dalaran.

Pay attention to the price of it in your Auction House on off-days, and then on days when it is in high demand, and you'll likely see a rather stark difference. If Mustard Dogs hasn't been the daily quest for nearing a week, the price differences would likely be even larger.

If you're the type to do it, buy low and sell high, or buy low and use the goods for your own Daily Cooking Quest needs.

Or, if you're someone who's still got a toon that is advancing through the Northrend levels, and especially a toon that is capable of AOE killing of groups of mobs, you might want to consider collecting your own stacks of meat - either for sale, or for your own personal use.

A great spot to find a lot of Rhino is between Amber Ledge and Warsong Hold in the Borean Tundra, where herds of them wander around with quick respawn timers.

Have you found another great spot for farming Rhino aside from this one? Be sure to let me know!

  1. I stopped doing the cooking quests a while back, dont really know why i just did the ones for recipes i needed then stopped.

    Need to start agin though.

  2. Hey!

So..first off for the last few months I have been reading all your posts on here and I check daily if you have updated anything, as I am eager to see what sort of things you have to say about the game. I am currently um let's say retired for the last year and a few months, but this game has such a huge hold on me that I cannot help but want to hear everything I can about it still. So your posts are a great insight to put me back in that realm. I figured since I read them everyday that I might as well start trying to post comments as I have noticed you sometimes reply to other peoples comments on here.

So first off do you think it's been a mistake by Blizzard that they are awarding you with two cooking awards with this mustard dog quest? Do you think it will be changed?

Secondly, I notice how you always stress out the importance of having all those much needed consumables considering you are such a huge raider and go through instances regularly. I've recently realized they stopped the whole thing with Mana oils and Sharpening stones so that level 71+ cannot use them, Apparently this was due to raiders saying that the cost of all consumables was getting to be to much. Personally when I was raiding back when I played I really didn't mind picking up that extra mana oil for my mage or hunter, even if it wasn't the most expensive ones you could buy..so i'm wondering if you have found it to be a sad thing they are gone...or is it just something you don't really need anymore and it was a waste of money?

  3. Not for rhino meat, but for another popular high price meat. Mammoth meat! If you've done the sons of hordir quests line and have the area available to you. There will be huge fast respawns of mammoth that run around in circles right outside the main camp. AOE is king! I can usually gather 40 in an hr, and a stack will sell for 50g on my server :0 An easy 100g / hr. Another good place for meat farming are the baby seals on the very bottom coast of... crap, whats that place? they drop chilled meat by the handfull.

  4. Thanks for another great post. Yeh, I've got a couple stacks of rhino meat as well as chilled meat. I have a ton of Northern, Old, and Baby spices but have yet to get anything else from the 'spice bag'... no recipes or awards. Oh, just did the mushroom something or another quest this a.m..... another easy one that takes about 5 minutes in all.

  5. Hey there Traxxem! Great to hear from you :) :) I love to hear from readers and although it takes me a few days to get to 'em, I do respond to comments, for sure!

Hmm, to answer your questions, I can't see the Mustard Dogs! extra token thing being changed - if it were a mistake it would have been pulled out by now... I think it's just a nice bonus. Maybe it's to balance out the disappointment we feel when it's the Crystalsong Carrots one and we're supposed to go ALL THE WAY outside of the city to complete the quest.

Regarding the change of consumables for raiders, I've heard a few things about the removal of the Oils and Sharpening Stones that we used to apply to our weapons in BC and before:

First, I heard it was to "simplify" raiding consumables, which didn't make a lot of sense to me because if you're already collecting Flasks, Elixirs, Potions and Buff Foods, adding one more thing to it doesn't seem "complicated" to me.

The next thing I heard made more sense: There are skills and spells that certain classes can use which augments their skills via weapon buffs - Warlocks have a DPS-enhancing stone, Rogues have poisons, etc - and Blizzard wanted to make it so these skills were part of the "desirability" of those specific classes. Like the class desirability for Hunters and Mages and Rogues because they have a way to completely drop out of combat in a bad situation while the rest of us die ;)

As for the question as to whether I feel sad that they're gone... well, let's just say that I'm weird! I see no point in being sad about something I can't change, and therefore I always re-direct my thoughts to a more joyful place.

I play the game Blizzard presents to us, and if I'm tired or frustrated about one class for a bit, there's always my handful of alts to change the perspective for a while.

Great to hear from you, hope to see your questions again soon!

  6. I find the drop rate in the Basin is much better for rhino meat. There are more rhinos in Borean Tundra, but the drop rate sucks. You can also then do some chilled meat farming on gators and hardknuckles.

  7. I certainly enjoy having even a tiny boost to my mana regen when healing. Every bit helps!

  8. I tend to use Fangtooth Herring for my mana regen food because it's cheap as heck on the AH with there being no other use but as a Mana Regen buff food. Rhino meat, in turn, is way more expensive...

  9. Awesome! Now that my Mage is 76 I'll check out that new locale!

Right at 70/71 however, where my Mage sat for many months, the Tundra is a great place to burn off some rest bonus and get some valuable drops for your own toons or for the AH :)
