Since When Has Wintergrasp Become So Elitist?
A Recent Adventure In Wintergrasp
Here's my story, devoid of emotion:
My 78 Mage sees that the Wintergrasp battle is coming up and that a raid is forming on the Trade line.
I'm in Shattrath, respec'ing my Tailoring from Spellweave to Ebonweave, and I send a whisper. Invite is extended, because of course it's an auto-inviter.
"Hey there, I'm going to DC for a moment to send myself some cash, please don't boot me :)"
I log out, hop over to a bank toon and send myself another 150g.
I hop back, and lo and behold, I'm no longer in a raid group.
But, you see, I have a friend in the raid group, so I asked him if I could get a re-invite. No :( The party is full.
I make my way to Dalaran to the Wintergrasp Horde portal and consider my options.
In the mean time, my friend relays some useful information to me - the name of the person who had booted me from the raid when I disconnected.
What Would You Do?
In this situation, how would you handle it?
And the way you choose handle it, would it make you feel better, or just make you feel worse for longer?
How I Responded
In short, I'm not a confrontive person.
I see no benefit in confronting people in 95% of cases where confrontation may normally exist, because in my experience confrontation doesn't lead to a lasting solution, except in a small percentage of cases.
If a friend of mine is trying to get me to agree with their poor assessment of someone else, I'm happy to be confrontive and point out where the complainer is helping create that which he despises, but if some random person acts like a jerk, I don't think they're worth my time.
If I were to give attention to every random jerk I run into in World of Warcraft, I wouldn't have time to pay attention to the things that bring me joy! (Unless of course being angry makes me feel better because of a previous deep depression)

I found a new raid before I even found out who booted me from the other.
When I found out the name of the one who booted me, I took note (and hmm I think he app'd to our guild but was denied in the past for some reason) and pondered briefly in a Passive Aggressive way about posting something that would ensure he never joined our guild while I was a member...
But I dismissed that, too, because while the thought of Revenge made me feel better immediately after having been dissed for being a meagre 2 levels below cap (I mean - come on! I understand when the whole place whines about a level 58 that somehow managed to get there, but 78??), it, too, is not worth the energy.
I figure if he's been a jerk to me, some random player, he's been a jerk to others, so I won't have to be the one remebering his name - other guildmates will have had experiences with him, too.
The End Result
Just to let you know, I got a re-invite from the guy who booted me from the first raid, but I was already in the second raid that was forming and filling up fast.
I whispered him that I had found another group, but thanked him for the re-invite and wished his group luck.
I made sure to use a smiley, because they help communicate "it's all good" in a way that words-only cannot.
Plus, as a bonus, it let the guy know that he didn't "get" to me. He didn't aggravate me, he didn't push my buttons.
Bullies get no fun out of people like me.

I agree with your title, on my server even at 80 you need to know the fights to get in the raids for VOA. As for the PVP part of WG I have seen some 77s pull more then their share of the weight. Wintergraasp was ment to be fun not a chore, or hard core elite only event. I think you did right in how you handled that dude and I always try to remember that sooner or later Karma will get him.
Alright....another great topic that I can chime in with another experience in my past it sort of reminded me of. Now I realize that it may sound stupid or you may laugh at the situation I was in but whatever I'm not going to take it to heart.
Okay so back when I was playing my main was a mage, BC came out and unfortunately living and working away from my home town so I had to get my best friend to buy a copy of the special edition and then mail it up to me..i got it a couple days after the release so I was already a few days behind everyone else. Anyways at the time I was in quite a hardcore raiding guild...how so? well they had cleared all the lvl 60 content before BC had come out, and so you know when I hit 60 one of the first raids I went to was AQ 20 and 40 since it just released. One of the members in my guild had already had 113 days played compared to me just hitting lvl 60. So they were a bit more knowledgeable than myself i understand that.
Anyways so we head into the outlands and my guild sets a cap which..i dunno I enjoyed the raiding aspect of the game i just had not been playing it all that much to really get into it and know what to do all the time..just didn't have the experience..So the cap was set that within 2 weeks we had to have hit lvl 70, and another two weeks we were to have all our heroic keys and running heroics that way right after they could start doing Gruul's and kara.
So my friend and I in the guild both having to work long hours and usually working 4-12 being the prime time raiding hours we couldn't participate anyways so we leveled up on our own took maybe a month or two to hit 70...So this one time i'm playing at an internet cafe..just bought a brand new macintosh laptop and the guild was like Hey hey we need one more for Gruuls, come join us and they invite me..fully knowing i've never been into any raids at lvl 70..and all my gear was mostly greens maybe 1-2 blue items.
We had cleared all through the first boss and we had worked our way to Gruuls and wiped on the first attempt...on the run back inside...no one mentioned anything and I just see a sign pop up saying you will be hearthed in 60 seconds...i'm like wtf why did i just get booted from the raid...someone is like well you are not doing enough dps...someone was supposed to take you out and talk to you and let you know you are being replaced..you are not even doing more than the tanks....
So i understand being replaced and all but like...they could have chosen to do it in a different manner, or well there are different ways they could have approached it at least...they knew i didn't have the gear or the knowledge yet to run through there and they were the ones to invite me in the first place...
Anyways to top the whole thing off I had sat right on my laptop before the raid had started as i was cleaning the table..and my whole screen was cracked. Best way to describe it is if you think of someone shooting a bullet through your lcd or plasma tv..so made things a bit difficult to see when you are fighting..meh anyways my two cents...
Shortly after I had found a guild more suited to my playing style and at my learning curve...I suppose this comment could also work well with how you mentioned in one of your latest posts finding a good raiding guild and such...they were just to hardcore for my style at the time...maybe if i didn't work or anything i would have been able to play and grind things out like they did...
I probably would have done what you did. Everyone makes mistakes.
Heya Traxxem!
First off, I'm still chewing on your last question, about why I went Disc on the Guild's behest, so I haven't forgotten about the question yet :)
I'm so sorry to hear about your Mac!!! I hope it didn't cost a whole lot to get fixed/replaced!
In terms of the hardcore rules for advancing and getting into content right away, when WoTLK released, there were a few guilds who felt that everyone needed to get to 80 within 2 weeks as well. My guild took a more leisurely route and didn't start any official raids until after the New Year, and folks who hadn't hit 80 weren't penalized with anything but the fact that the rest of the guild was going into Naxx and they wanted to go too ;)
It's very important to find a guild that meshes with your time, skills and interest, and, frankly, the ability of your computer as well. Sometimes that guild that used to be great for you changes, or you change, and the guild that was great no longer is great.
It's okay - change is meant to happen. Don't feel too guilty when it comes time to find a more joyful place to play.
Indeed. I'm fortuniate that I was brought into the game by a group of friends, some who have been playing since almost day 1, but we all knew each other from real life, and they wer always willing to let me tag along on raids and instances that were well over my power curve. Were I with a group who only were interested in power-play or in seeking to have a core group of elite raiders I doubt I would still be playing. Your guild sounds pretty cool in that regard too.
And I think you made the correct call in the situation, for what its worth.
I personally maintain a blacklist on Google Docs of who never to invite to raids or what not and share it with other players from the guild and other guilds.

Although that being said, you know Wintergrasp is going to happen soon. I'm not quite sure why you felt the need to immediately log off and switch characters RIGHT before a battle to send yourself gold. It's not like your durability was already shot or anything, right?
I take time management quite seriously in raids or in anything I do. There are some things that can wait until after an event. Most leaders will just boot DC'd people even if a reason is given because they don't see it. It's like whack a mole. Patience isn't always an asset that players have.

Heya Matticus!
Great to hear from you. Interesting about the Black List - how do you keep up with the people who keep getting name changes to hide their past history?
And I probably didn't mention it in the original post, but I personally subscribe to the thought of:
Be there at least 15 minutes early for any event you plan to attend if there's any pre-gathering required.
It was easy to find another Wintergrasp raid right afterwards because I joined the first raid with 20 minutes left before Wintergrasp even started :)
But I do agree, patience is not the "virtue" it once was in our world of instant gratification!
And in the end, our raid filled up just fine and even with two raids we still lost, hee hee :)
