Learned Everything From The Book

Learned Everything From The Book

Yay! Finally, after investing many thousands of gold worth of my World of Warcraft savings, I've been rewarded on my level 80 Disc/Holy Priest Inscriptionist with the one message that means the money hemorrhage has been stopped.

"You have learned everything from this book"

This means that I have learned all of the new Glyphs that were released with patch 3.1 and the "Glyph Mastery" books, and since there have been no recent discoverable glyphs via the Northrend or Minor Glyph Discovery methods, that's it.

I can officially say, at least until things change, that I Know It All.

Inscription == Big Bucks + Big Bleeds

Inscription is one of those professions that can be incredibly lucrative, or incredibly expensive, depending on what phase you're in, in terms of advancing levels or filling out your Glyph Selection.

I've gone through phases of putting every extra gold piece into the materials that allow me to create the Glyphs, and then phases shortly afterwards where I earned 5000-12000g from those very same Glyphs I'd created and stored.

I've gone through phases of not doing a thing with Inscription other than make a few Glyphs for friends or guildmates now and then, and then - like recently - have spent an intense amount of focus on that profession to the complete exclusion of others.

So in short, my answer is that yes Inscription can be very profitable.

How To Profit From Inscription

My Pre-Dual Spec Release Stock

My Pre-Dual Spec Release Stock

If you pay close attention to which of your Glyphs are the most profitable in the Auction House on your realm, and watch for cheap herbs to mill from the Auction House, you can make a steady profit from the profession of Inscription from week to week.

Also, if you are smart with market speculation as to when there will be a larger demand of Glyphs than other times, you can make a huge amount of profit in a small amount of time just by being ready. (the release of 3.1 is one example, and those with early Glyph Mastery books made a fortune on some of those Glyphs too)

Beware The Bleed

But, Inscription can also bleed you completely dry of all of your cash and still not give satisfactory returns if you're not careful about your herb buying and choice of Glyphs to sell in comparison to your current market.

Take Advantage Of The Weekend Farmers

On the realm of Zul'jin, at least, there's a marked difference in prices for Herbs purchased halfway through the week, and Herbs purchased on Sundays and Mondays.

Supply is way up in the latter half of the weekend after all of the casual players and weekday raiders have spent a bunch of their time questing and farming in order to earn gold for their next purchase, and that always drives the price per stack down.

Keep in mind that this also applies for most of the Glyphs you'd be making to sell, and consider trying to sell your glyphs mid-to-late week instead of during the "lull time" of Sunday and Monday.

Any Tips You'd Like To Share?

I'd love to hear from the readership if there's more advice that you'd like to offer for others reading this post!

  1. I'll start on topic and then go off on a typical Mortigan tangent.

I think one way to approach Glyph-selling on AH is to to a little bit of online digging and see what Glyphs are recommended for various talent builds, and stock those primarily. For instance, there are a TON of absolutely WORTHLESS Warlock glyphs, with stats like: "This major glyph will reduce casting time on a spell you never use by .001%." It really comes down to there being only a handful of useful Glyphs for each of the 3 available Warlock talent trees.

I was shopping AH this morning for new glyphs after getting dual spec (the tangent I'll talk about in a minute). The worthless glyphs are well-stocked on AH, and I really can't believe that people expect to get 12 - 18 gold for any of them. I mean - really - has anyone EVER bought a Glyph of Howl of Terror? Who would waste a slot on such a worthless glyph? On the flip-side, some of the more important Glyphs are not in AH - so they're either sold out or no one is noticing that they're missing. For the last 3 days I've looked for Glyph of Lifetap and Glyph of Incinerate. Neither are in AH. I'm going to have to hunt down someone to make them for me... hey, I've got an idea - How about you pop on over to Draenor-US and stock us up? You'd have two guaranteed glyph sales!

Now for my tangent. The reason for my glyph shopping is because of getting dual spec. This past weekend was my first taste of Heroic dungeons. I went through several Heroics with my guildmaster, who cleverly put together some ROCKING uber-groups and would whisper to me "I've made sure you're the only cloth-wearer in the group. You'll be able to get ALL the cloth drops. lol!" and every time something I could use would drop, he'd whisper, "NEED that @&^$@!!!" So I got a purple wand and a few decent blues. But the entire time, I was noticing that Recount showed me dead last in the groups - and locks are supposed to be putting out serious DPS. I was hitting around 1K while some of these seriously geared toons were hitting 3 or 4 times that. None of them complained, but perhaps my guildmaster had already explained to them that I was a fresh 80 and undergeared - I don't know.

Anyway, yesterday morning I put myself in LFG for reg Culling of Stratholme and Occulus I think, as well as getting brave and putting myself in LFG for reg Naxx Raid. I got an invite for H CoH and joined the group. I'd never been there, and didn't do my homework first. I figured someone would explain any vital boss issues as we go along (standard procedure in my previous groups). So anyway, we blasted through it and I churned out around 1100 dps by my Recount. And the whole time our group leader kept posting the Recount data... after just about every fight. I was 3rd, beating some warrior who was hitting around 950 dps. We ran out of time - i think - on one of the final bosses who faded away, but the absolute last boss showed up and we killed him. I got the achievement for heroic and such. No one died at all, and so I was pretty pleased with things. But mister Recount chimes in with "Guys, this was just sad." And I reply, "What was sad?" and he says, "A lock doing only 1K damage! And you were in a LFG for a Raid! You need to be doing 2500 to Raid!" I guess he was angry because if I had been doing more damage, we'd have moved along faster and not ran out of time - but I got the achievement so not sure 100% about the timer issue.

Anyway, I was pretty embarrassed and angry - but decided not to tell him off. I just left the group and hearthed. Decided to get dual spec - which I was going to wait on until AFTER artisan flying - because the destruction spec kicks out higher damage. If you remember, I have Mortigan's affliction set up to maximize my fun and effectiveness on solo play, and the points I put into my Voidwalker take away from some of my damage possibilities.

Which leads me to my final question. How much of an overall difference can glyphs and gear make to the amount of DPS a person does? I read all the time about warlocks doing 3500 dps, and now Mortigan has his deep destruction build set EXACTLY the way these braggarts do, and he did 1500 dps this morning on the Herioc Training Dummy. Of course, he was missing the pile of buffs that come with larger groups, and he's short the Glyph of Incinerate... so my guess is that he could expect to get a few hundred more with the final glyph and extra buffs? Is better gear really going to add another 1 or 2 thousand DPS?

  2. Great tips. One of my alts is currently leveling his Inscription, and I defenitly know what you mean out it bleeding you dry!

  3. Hey there, Mort!

Sounds like by your description of your Warlock that you're right where most normal people would be when they hit 80. It's unfortunate you chose a timed run which came with an impatient tank :)

To answer your question in short: Yes, the better gear will really add that much extra DPS (well, that and enchants/gems - how are you there?)

    Some things to note:

For heroics you should have 1k+ dps, so keep doing what you're doing there. Maybe avoid Culling of Strat that has a timed run "weight" on it for a bit.

For your first Naxx10, around 1400 is adequate, but 1500-1600 is better. Note, just from the raid buffs you'll get that extra DPS if you're doing about 1200 in Heroics, generally. Plus, Naxx10 has a lot of trash you can AOE down which brings up your DPS ;)

By the time you're heading into Naxx25 you want to be doing at least 2k (2.5 is better), and don't even TRY to go into VoA/Emalon without a minimum of 3k DPS.

Another thing you might want to discuss with other same-spec Locks is their spell rotation during both long and short fights, and see if that helps your DPS. It might just be about efficiencies.

Lemme know how things progress! Great to hear you have the friends to set you up with great heroics and maybe a couple of raids now and then :)

    Val

  4. Regarding enchants/gems, none of my gear is enchanted beyond the stats it came with. Items are switching so frequently these days I'm not sure if it's worth having an enchanter do some work or buy scrolls, etc.

As far as gems go, 3 or four of my items have gem slots, and every time I get a gemmed item, I go to the AH and load it up with either +SP or +Hit gems... so no empty gem slots.

I also have 3 non-equipped +Hit items, such as the Argent Skullcap, but their +Stam +Int isn't as good as my latest gear (which doesn't have +Hit). So I don't plan to wear these +Hit items unless it becomes an issue... When I was in H CoS, there were a few mobs that showed lvl 82, but I didn't experience any misses, so I didn't see the need to sacrifice STAM and INT for HIT. Had I been missing some of the time, I would've switched to the spare Hit gear immediately. (Right now, my hit is around 118, and adding the 3 hit items will raise it another 100 or so.) I need to have something like 440 or so for hit cap on Destro spec, but only half that with my original Affliction spec, due to my Suppression 3/3 supposedly making up for a good bit.

Geez, I'm starting to sound like the brain-melting guys on the warlock forums! My sincere apologies to anyone trying to make sense of this.

Thanks so much for posting the general expectations for DPS. That type of info is EXTREMELY helpful to me. Much better than mister Recount berating me with, "You need to be doing 2500!" - which makes me think of the chicken or the egg: "How will I ever get to 2500 DPS if I can't get into Heroics and Raids to get the necessary gear in the first place?" - Drooling over Tier 8 Warlock Gear achieves nothing but a puddle of drool and a dry mouth at this point.

  5. hey shrimpy,

had i known you had soo many glyphs banked, i would have come to you instead of spending almost 500g on glyphs this week.

  6. @Mortigan Glyph of Howl of Terror is popular amongst many people I know for their arena spec. It sells on my server, and sells regularly for about 30g each. So, to answer your question, yes people do buy it. :)

  7. @elfennau Awesome, I was waiting for someone to answer that :) :)

@kastagyr Dernit! I tried to let key officer-type people know of my Glyph Mastery but I guess it didn't get through properly. Prehaps I should post on the guild board, as 5 Northrend herbs can make pretty much any Glyph nowadays.

  8. I bought 2,000 gold worth of herbs before the inscription patch came out and got my 55 warr all the way to 350 inscription. Now I just need to level the warrior. Glad to know it's actually making money. I was worried when i heard the chatter about dual spec and how that would really sink the market once everyone got satisfied with their dual spec. Prior to dual spec, people were buying stacks of glyphs so they could switch out when they respec.

  9. WowGrrl, do you use any particular addons to help keep an eye on the inscription/herbs market?

  10. Hmm, I had to ponder this one a bit - generally I just use Auctioneer and WoWEcon as my two main ways to tell what is profitable/make AH listing easier. Other'n that over time I tend to notice the profitable vs non-profitable ones, and the non-profitable ones become donations to leveling guild banks ;)
