What Is Skype?

The best definition I found came from http://it-legends.com/glossary which writes:

"Skype is an IP telephony service provider that offers free calling between computers and low-cost calling to regular telephones that aren't connected to the Internet."

In other words, it's a free voice chat service if you use Skype to talk to other Skype users, with paid features available that allow you to use Skype as an Internet Telephone to send and receive calls to/from regular land-line telephones that we all have in our living rooms.

And of course, the "paid" features aren't required - ever - and really don't make sense for you to worry about considering, either.

What You Need To Use Skype

Skype works on both Windows and Macintosh platforms, and while it's an audio/video chat service at the free level, video is not required and will not be used.

Therefore, all you really need beyond installing the Skype software itself is a microphone or maybe a headset to make talking and clicking/typing easier during the call.
