This story begins on a Friday morning when my guild line was quiet and my Orc Rogue had 50% rest bonus to burn off as she advanced towards 43.

As a standard first-measure, I put myself into the LFG tool - but since I wasn’t officially ready to hit any dungeons yet, I put myself in the tool in a way that most players searching wouldn’t find me: In a Zone, instead of in a dungeon. I did this so I wouldn’t likely get whispered, but I’d still be “in the tool” and thus subscribed to the LFG chat channel, which is where half of the LFG action takes place. I do this on all of my toons and watch the LFG line for people looking for members to take on something one of my other toons could join in on.

Preparing For The Run

No quests picked up, this is an exp-and-loot run.
Repaired all equipment to 100% durability.
Consumables brought include:

Listing In The Tool

I’m level 42, an awkward level as far as dungeons are concerned. I list myself in Razorfen Downs, Maraudon, and resign myself to being okay with Scarlet Monestary’s Cathedral as well.

As is standard, I put a note into the LFG tool comment area: “whisper first, pls - combat rogue”. I like it when people filling out a group whisper me first before they invite, because then I know what the invite extended to me is coming for.

Invite Extended

It wasn’t long before I got an invite. No whisper ahead of time, so I did a quick /who and found the player was a 38 Paladin, in range for an instance, and not a gold spammer as sometimes happens.

I whispered before accepting the invite, “what instance are you looking at doing?”, and the response came back: “RFD”.

I accept the invitation.

Starting Party Layout

It’s not a full party, but thanks to WoW armory I see we have one 38 Warlock and one 38 Retribution Paladin in the party, plus me.

Then, a 36 Holy Priest joins, and the party leader says how he’s got a 5th who can join us in 5 minutes.

Making Way To The Stone

As soon as the party formed and the dungeon was confirmed, I headed from Orgrimmar to Camp T in The Barrens to begin my trek towards the stone. I make it a point to not join the LFG tool until I’m ready to head towards the instance because a number of times I’ve been caught off guard by parties that needed someone and were ready to summon RIGHT NOW. Better safe than sorry, better relaxed than stressed.

The Holy Priest inquires about whether we should head towards the stone and the party leader says yes, that’s a good idea, might as well start to convene.

Arrival And Sitting At The Stone

I get there and I’m alone, which is fine because I was pretty near to the instance when I got into the group in the first place. So, I sit and wait for the Holy Priest to arrive.

I get myself a drink and return to the computer.

Party Leader - Duelling?

Hmm, why’s the party at such minimal health, with a fireball DOT on him?

Now he’s dead.

Now he’s re-popped, at full health.

There’s that fireball DOT on him again.

I hover over him and get something non-descript like “Farm” and I think of the pig farm just outside of Orgrimmar heading south towards Razor Hill.

Later, I see Defiler’s Den when I hover over him, and then finally the ever-clear, Arathi Basin.

He’s in the battlegrounds while he’s “leading” an instance party?

Voicing Displeasure

I inquire on the party line about the guild leader PvPing while the group was encouraged to go to the summoning stone (ie: “hey, I don’t want to interrupt my game playing to do something trivial like make my way to the instance as the party leader, and I can use you guys to make it easier for me, right?”) and of course, since he’s in Arathi Basin as well, he can’t see the party line outside the dungeon and doesn’t know what I’m saying.

The Holy Priest whispers me to agree with my displeasure and after a few moments of discussion there, we decide to drop group and try to find another group, together.

Dropping Group, Jumping Back On The LFG Line

Right after I drop group, I get myself back on the LFG line and advertise: “42 Rogue LFG RFD”, and the Holy Priest whispers me and asks to join up with me for this new group I’m seeking. I invite him and turn back to the LFM tool to see what other partial groups have formed and are looking for members.

PvPing Pally Whispers

Shortly after I send my LFG out to the LFG line, the PvPing Pally whispers me, asking what happened, as I was going in to the instance with his group. The discussion was brief, as my priority was to find myself and the healer a new party and not explain the fine details of why we bailed:

It’s Rude To Expect A Summon When Leading A PUG

New Party Secured

As soon as I was done with the PvPing Pally convo, I looked at the LFG tool and saw that there was a party of three - two pallies and a rogue - looking for two more in order to go into RFD. I whispered the leader of the party and he asked us to drop group so we could join his.

Turns out there was a Prot Pally, a Ret Pally and a Combat Rogue in their group, so the addition of our Holy Priest and the extra DPS to fill out the party was all we needed to head in.

We headed in right away, and had an awesome run. Unfortunately, nothing good dropped, but we got all the way through the instance and even completed the Escort without a single death!!

At level 64 my Mage dropped skinning (which was at 375) and picked up Tailoring as a way to get a leg up on getting the best equipment for my Mage when the time comes to pick up things like Primal Nethers in the dungeon runs I’m doing.

Farming Linen Cloth

As a Troll was my first character and I didn’t actively play anything other than one character until that one hit 60 (pre-expansion), Orgrimmar is the city that I’m most used to, so whenever it comes time to pick up some training, Orgrimmar is where I default to.

AOE Farming of Ragefire Chasm / RFC

So, I went into The Drag and picked up Tailoring, and then I headed into the Cleft of Shadows and jumped into Ragefire Chasm, aka RFC - a dungeon aimed for level 12-17 Hordies (you CAN get in at level 8 but I wouldn’t recommend trying that in a Pick Up Group of strangers).

I farmed through RFC twice for the Linen Cloth and lowbie green equipment drops (you see, ever the alt-o-holic, I have a new lowbie - currently level 10 druid) and after those two smashingly-fun AOE-fest farm-throughs, I had enough linen to turn into enough bolts to make enough Tailoring gear that I could consider progressing on to Wool Cloth very shortly.

Farming Linen Cloth and Wool Cloth

Deadmines was the next dungeon that I farmed through with my Mage - I have never gone through the instance as an Alliance player (my highest Alliance toon made it to 20 but never instanced), but since one of my guildmates got to mid-40s with an Alliance toon as his first he was able to pass on the information that Deadmines (sometimes called Van Cleef so it’s not confused with Dire Maul when referred to in short form) is a GREAT place to farm for both Linen Cloth and Wool Cloth.

Deadmines isn’t as easy to AOE group up in some spots because while all the Defias guys (Defias Conjurer, Defias Blackguard, Defias Bodyguard, Defias Digger, Defias Evoker, Defias Henchmen, etc) were easy enough to round up (and I resisted anything the casters threw at me so that wasn’t a big deal), the Goblin Woodcarvers later on threw axes at me and knocked me down mid-gather. Ah well, they all died for their treachery.

Mage AOE Farming of Deadmines / Van Cleef dungeon

My favorite place to gather everyone up and hose them all down with my Blizzard spell was near the end, as I was approaching the final boss Van Cleef - out on the docks with the plethora of Pirates and their companion Parrots. From what I remember, none of them were casters so it was super easy to gather them up and mow them down, and the death sounds of the little parrots was great! ;) ;)

Farming Silk Cloth

When it comes to Silk, there’s one place that I think of - Scarlet Monestary. I’ve actually nicknamed that “The Silk Factory” and generally refer to it that way when someone saw my 64 Mage in Scarlet Monestary and wondered what was going on.

At the level of Silk in Tailoring, things start to slow down quite a bit. Where I only needed 2 runs each of RFC and VC, I probably did 4 runs of the Scarlet Monestary Armory and 3 of the Scarlet Monestary Cathedral in order to get enough Silk Cloth to progress past it into things that required Mageweave Cloth.

I brought a guildmate friend through with me for at least two of the Scarlet Monestary runs to help spread the benefit around - burning off rest bonus on his lowbie toon and getting some equipment upgrades while handing over all of the Wool Cloth, Silk Cloth and Mageweave Cloth that dropped from the mobs we were killing.

Mageweave and Runecloth were levels where I “got by with a little help from my friends”, for sure - but I don’t have time to continue this entry right now so I’ll write more later!

Planning Reputation Gain: Mage

Posted by: WoWGrrl    in Adventures In Outland

My mage is 1/3 of the way through level 61 now and spec’d 2/0/50 - Frost to the hilt minus the 2 I put in in Arcane Subtlety to reduce my opponents’ resistences to all my attacks by 10% mainly, but also to reduce the threat of my Arcane spells by 40% which is nice in a party situation.

I’m no pro at a Mage spec, and am open to input if one feels educated enough and compelled to supply it ;) Check out my spec for Bluehairmage and leave a comment.

While I’ve already got a 70, I’m planning for Bluehair to be the character that does the dungeons, grinds the rep, and lets me see the cool things I can’t see as a solo character. (it will, of course, be a slower progression than some may be used to, but faster than others I suppose!)

So far…

I entered into Outlands at level 59 and did enough quests in Hellfire Peninsula to get myself to 60. From there, I visited Sen’jin to pick up my Swift Olive Raptor and visited the trainer in Orgrimmar to get my new skills. I was happiest to find that my next set of water started out making 10 at a time instead of 2!

Once I hit 60 and got trained up, I visited the Auction House to upgrade old bits of Azeroth equipment that hadn’t been upgraded from the quests I did in Hellfire Peninsula, and then I headed back to Thrallmar and the next time I was ready to play, I put myself into the LFG tool as being interested in going into Ramparts.

So far I’ve done enough Ramparts and Blood Furnace runs (6 of the first, 3 of the other - something like that) to get to 5999/6000 in Friendly, then started doing some Thrallmar quests to top myself into Honored.

When I left the city, I had used up all of my rest bonus, pushing my Mage through from 56 over the last month or so. I come back and find myself at 82% rested, which is very nice!

Where Next?

I know that I need to get Revered reputation with a number of factions, as outlined in the World of Raids section I found while searching the topic in Google, and I’ll trust in WoWWiki.com for telling me the most efficient way of progressing through each faction itself, but in general I’m not sure what my path will be.

I guess I’ll do Hellfire Peninsula quests until they start annoying me too much, then I’ll head into Zangarmarsh and follow whatever strategy is suggested for Cenarion Expedition reputation, and then come back to Hellfire Peninsula when I’m bigger and badder. Revered in a number of reputation trees seems like a lot of work… anyone have suggestions or a blog entry or something to point me to to help me with more direction than my current random wanderings? :)
