Runs around the time of the Summer Solstice on US servers. The Midsummer Fire Festival is here!

This entry is about one of the many neat things that have come along with this festival celebrating the arrival of Summer in the northern hemisphere.

How To Use This Special Event To Powerlevel Your Lowbies

Any level of player can use some of the magic of this festival to gain a 10% premium to the experience they gain killing mobs, for a full hour!

You can easily use this to help power your lower level toons through levels a bit faster - but make use of it now before this bonus is removed!

How do you do it?

Found only during the special mid-summer festival time of yearSimply find the Midsummer Festival Ribbon Pole near the Midsummer Bonfire major city in World of Warcraft (I did it in Undercity on my way to Scarlet Monestary with my 33 druid)…

Hovering over the pole’s top half will reveal a cog to click - when you click it, you’ll get a “ribbon” attached to you from the pole’s top, and as long as you don’t run too far away from the pole the ribbon will stay attached.

If you wish, you can run around the pole, but it’s not required. Just something to do to entertain yourself ;)

I think I\'m going to huuuuuurlAfter a few moments of having the ribbon attached, your character will start to spin around and around in a squatted position with its arms extended, with the ribbon still attached. You can still run around, jump, do whatever, while this is going on, and it won’t disrupt it unless you go out of range of the Ribbon Pole.

Once you’ve been spinning for a little bit, you should be able to see a buff applied to your toon, displayed to the left of your minimap with the other buffs!

Unfortunately, this buff is removed upon death, so be careful - but charge up whenever you’re in a city!

At level 70, there’s a whole bunch of things to do to keep yourself entertained. Way more things to do than used to be the case at level 60, in fact.

Daily Dungeon quests are one of the many dailies a level 70 player can get involved with, and each day there are two daily dungeon quests - one for a dungeon on regular mode, and one for a dungeon on Heroic mode. The “regular mode” daily dungeon quest can be done in Heroic or Regular and count, whereas the one requiring Heroic mode cannot be done on Normal mode.

Generally, the reward for completing a Heroic mode Daily Dungeon quest is a chunk of pocket change (ie: nearly 25g) and two Badge of Justice (which can be turned in for nice epic gear when enough are accumulated).

The reward for the regular mode daily dungeon quest is slightly less pocket change (8g 80s) and one of these Ethereum Prison Keys.

A Place To Use Your Ethereum Prison Key For Lewts And Rewards

I think there’s a few things you can do with your key, but I went for the easiest-to-solo option, which was to fly to Netherstorm and find a specific spot (54,40) that had a bunch of Ethereum Prisons on the ground in their pink bubbly format, and use my keys to unlock the prisons and free that which was inside.

Where To Use Your Ethereum Prison Key (Daily Dungeon reward)

From what I had read about it, the keys would unlock the bubble and either a “friendly” or an “aggressive” target would emerge. The aggressive ones would require killing but would drop loot of uncommon and higher quality. The friendly ones… I don’t remember. The first four keys I turned in gave me Aggressive targets to kill and loot.

Have you used your keys for other things?

One of the many repeat topics of conversation regarding the World of Warcraft grouping dynamic is the question of whether there’s “enough” tanks and healers to support the number of DPS characters looking to complete the same content.

That is, are there enough players with proper skills, proper equipment and proper talent specializations (in that order) to handle the duties of Tank and Healer adequately in a group with three DPS players.

On Zul’jin, there are regularly times where it’s obvious some groups are having problems finding Healers and Tanks (could it be that some DPS folk have earned bad reputations?) and I’ve seen 6 DPS and 0 Tanks and Healers listed for Zul’Farrak in LFG as well as been in parties that disbanded after trying fruitlessly for a tank or healer, so I know our realm isn’t immune to this problem.

The topic itself deserves a family of entries dedicated to it (I wrote about a wee part of it back here, in the section labelled ‘What no LFG tool will ever fix’), and there are number of people who have already written mounds on the topic - one day I’ll link some of the ones I have found and my thoughts about the whole thing, but that’s not today.

Today, all I wish to do is show a wee bit of screenshot that I took in the past few days - I felt by looking at the LFG line output that I was living in an Alternate Universe where there were more Tanks and Healers than DPS toons about, because it seemed to me that there was actual competition for DPS classes to join dungeon parties.

Weird.

Early December 2007 in Zul’jin, tanks and healers full up!
